Medicaid Expansions Will Increase Public Dependence on the Government Hidden in the health care bills moving through Congress is a massive expansion of the welfare state. The proposed Medicaid expansion and new subsidies intended to make coverage more affordable do not reduce costs to the health care system, they add to them. Dennis Smith, Senior Fellow in the Center for Health Policy Studies, argues in a recent Heritage paper. Simply putting more money into the existing system governed by existing incentives rewards excess cost and will not meet Americans’ expectations that these bills would lower unnecessary health care spending.
